About Zach Edey
The Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA employ Zach Edey as their 7-foot-4 center who weighs 305 pounds. He began showing his athletic ability in hockey and baseball during his childhood but chose basketball at Leaside High School in Toronto before moving to IMG Academy in Florida where he developed into a three-star recruit.
During his four years at Purdue University from 2020 to 2024 Edey established himself as one of college basketball's most accomplished players. The college basketball world recognized his dominance through two consecutive National Player of the Year titles in 2023 and 2024 when he received all major scoring and defense and big man awards while leading the country in scoring (25.2 ppg) and rebounding (12.2 rpg) during his senior year. The 37 points he scored in the national championship game represented the highest tally of a losing effort since 1978 during his NCAA Tournament run.
The Memphis team drafted him as their ninth selection in the 2024 NBA Draft before he secured a multi-year contract to begin his rookie season. His NBA All-Rookie First Team selection occurred after he produced 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. His position as the league's tallest active player has solidified his role as Memphis' defensive and offensive anchor.
Edey brings power to Canada in international competitions as he won bronze and All-Tournament awards at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup before helping the senior team achieve their first Olympic Games appearance since 2000 through their bronze medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Edey grew up in a family who valued sports activities. Julia Edey, his mother, and Glen Edey, his father, who were both athletes in hockey and baseball, taught their son dedication and hard work because he is of Chinese descent and holds a mechanical engineering background. His family has provided essential backing to his basketball career development since the beginning.
