About Willie McGee
With speed, timely hitting, and superb defense, Willie McGee terrorized opposing teams for two decades. McGee was a key cog of the dominant Cardinals teams of the 1980s and was elected to the team’s Hall of Fame in 2014. A World Series champion in his 1982 rookie season, he would also win the 1985 NL MVP and a four-time All-Star. McGee led the National League in hitting twice and as a center fielder he won three Gold Gloves. In 1990, he won his second NL batting title, but was traded to the Oakland A’s late in the season as part of a rebuilding effort in St. Louis. McGee helped the A’s to the World Series, his fourth appearance in the Fall Classic. He also played for the San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox before returning to the Cardinals for the final four years of his career. In 2013, McGee was hired by St. Louis as a Special Assistant to the General Manager.
