About Willie Horton
Willie Horton had a long major league career, most notably with the Detroit Tigers. Horton was a four-time All-Star and won a title with the Tigers in 1968. His #23 jersey is retired by the franchise he played 15 seasons with. Seven seasons of 20 or more home runs contributed to Horton hitting over 300 long balls in his career. Horton may be best known in Detroit for standing in his Tigers jersey in the middle of the 1967 12th Street riot, urging people to end the chaos. Following his retirement, he coached for the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees. Since 2003, he has been a Special Assistant to the Tigers’ President and General Manager Dave Dombrowski. “Willie Horton Day” is celebrated every year in Michigan for his heroism during the riots and his outstanding tenure in baseball. Growing up in Arno, Virginia, Horton was the youngest of 21 children.
