Sean McVay Biography

Sean McVay is one of the top offensive minds in football and currently serves as the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams. Since taking over the franchise in 2017, he has turned them into one of the best teams in the NFL. McVay was named AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2017 after going 11-5 and winning the NFC West. The Rams followed up on that performance in 2018, going 13-3 and making an appearance in Super Bowl VIII. When McVay was hired by Los Angeles at the age of 30, he became the youngest head coach in modern NFL history.

Prior to becoming a head coach, he learned under some of the top names in the profession, including Jon Gruden, Mike Shanahan and Jay Gruden. After playing wide receiver at Miami University, Jon Gruden hired McVay as an assitant wide receivers coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008. He then joined Gruden's brother Jay in the United Football League, coaching wide receivers for the Florida Tuskers in 2009. McVay was hired by Shanahan to coach tight ends with the Washington Redskins and was promoted to offensive coordinator for the team when Jay Gruden was hired in 2014. He is from the Grudens hometown of Dayton, Ohio and their fathers worked together on a coaching staff at the University of Dayton. McVay has another strong family connection to football as his grandfather John was the head coach of the New York Giants and a respected executive with the San Francisco 49ers.
