About Rollie Fingers
Rollie Fingers, known as much for his twisted handlebar moustache as his pitching abilities, first signed to play for the Kansas City Athletics on Christmas Day of 1964. As a starting pitcher throughout his minor league days, Fingers was converted to one of the Leagues first full-time relief pitchers by the time he was called up to the majors. He became the first pitcher to average over 30 saves in a season and when he retired with 341 saves he set the MLB record that held until 92. Fingers was proof that a full-time closer was a valuable addition to the team and set the standard for how to use the position. Fingers went on to play for the Padres and Milwaukee Brewers and is one of the few players to have his number retired by multiple clubs (Athletics and Brewers). Fingers was a 7x All-Star and won 3 World Series rings with the As. In his first season with the Brewers in 1981, Fingers won AL Cy Young and the AL MVP and in 1992 became just the second reliever to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
