About Phil Nevin
Phil Nevin is one of the greatest players in the history of college baseball and he was able to parlay that into a successful 12-year major league career. Nevin first jumped onto the national radar by lifting Cal State Fullerton to the championship game of the 1992 College World Series. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament and won the Golden Spikes Award that year. The Houston Astros subsequently made him the top overall pick in the MLB Draft and he made his big league debut with the club in 1995. Nevin went on to play for the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels before finding a home with the San Diego Padres in 1999. His first year, he hit 31 home runs, only to be outdone by a career year in 2001, where he finished with 41 homers, 126 RBI, and was named an All-Star. Nevin played for the Padres through 2005 and finished his career the following season. He has since gone into coaching and is currently the Angels interim manager.
