About Mike Haynes
Mike Haynes played 13 seasons in the National Football League with the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Raiders. During that time he was one of the top cornerbacks in the league, earning nine Pro Bowl selections from 1976 to 1986. Haynes joined the Patriots as a first round selection out of the Arizona State University, where he earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors three times and was twice named an NCAA All-American. His performance with the Sun Devils would ultimately earn him a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001. In the 1976 NFL Draft he was selected with the No. 5 overall pick by the Patriots and went on to earn 1976 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors to go along with being named the UPI AFC Rookie of the Year. He played his first six seasons in New England before signing with the Oakland Raiders in 1983. The following season he was named NEA NFL Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Raiders to a win in Super Bowl XVIII. Haynes retired with the Raiders in 1989 with 46 interceptions and two touchdowns, and was named to both the NFL 1980’s All-Decade Team and NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. In 1997 he took his rightful place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and also had his legendary No. 40 jersey retired by the New England Patriots.
