About Michelle Akers
Women’s soccer in the United States has come to the forefront in recent years, and it’s no doubt due to the foundation that legends like Michelle Akers laid for this generation. Akers led the Women’s USA National Team to World Cup victories in 1991 and 1999, earning the Golden Boot as the leading goal scorer in the 1991 FIFA World Cup tournament.
While playing at the University of Central Florida she earned All-American honors in four consecutive years and was named the NCAA National Player of the Year in 1988. She made her first USA women’s national team in 1985 and would go on to become the most legendary player in their history. A member of two world championship teams and the 1996 Olympic Gold Medal team, Akers would retire in 2000 as the national team’s all-time leading scorer with 105 goals in 153 appearances.
In retirement Akers has been celebrated for her accomplishments on the soccer field. In 2002 she was named the FIFA Female Player of the Century and was honored with induction into the US National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2004. Currently Akers currently lives in Georgia and dedicates her time to her new passion, rescuing horses.
