Mary Joe Fernandez Biography

Mary Joe Fernandez was an outstanding junior tennis player, and captured four consecutive Orange Bowl junior titles after becoming the youngest player in history to win a main draw match at the U.S. Open at age 14 in 1985. The following year she turned pro and won her first doubles title in 1989. She’d go on to win 437 singles matches and seven WTA titles over the next 14 years with three finals appearances in the Australian Open and French Open. In 1992 she won an Olympic bronze medal while representing the United States. As a doubles player she won two grand slam titles, winning the Australian Open in 1991 and the French Open in 1996. She also won two gold medals at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic games. As both a singles and doubles player she reached a career high ranking of No. 4 in the world, and was no doubt one of the top competitors in the world from 1986 to 2000. During her decorated career she earned over $5.2 million in earnings.
