About Lester Hayes
Lester Hayes played in the National Football League for nine seasons with the Oakland Raiders from 1977 to 1986. He joined the Raiders in 1977 as a fifth round selection out of Texas A&M University, where he starred for the Aggies at safety and earned All-American honors. During his time with the Raiders he earned five Pro Bowl selections and six NFL All-Pro honors. In 1980 he earned the NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors after leading the league with 13 interceptions and went on to help the Raiders to a win in Super Bowl XV that season. Three years later he earned his second Super Bowl ring and earned a trip to his fourth Pro Bowl. He retired in 1986 with 39 career interceptions at the cornerback position and 572 interception return yards for four touchdowns. Known for his personality and bump and run coverage, he was one of the best lock down cornerbacks of his era. For his contributions to the Raiders he was named to the NFL 1980’s All-Decade Team.
