About Larry Blakeney
Larry Blakeney is a former football coach and player. Blakeney attended college at Auburn University where he played football from 1966-1969 and baseball during the 1968 season. After graduating from Auburn, Blakeney became the head coach at three high schools. Blakeney coached at Southern Academy from 1970-71, Walker High School from 1972-74 and Vestavia Hills High School from 1975-76. Blakeney was hired by Auburn in 1977 as the offensive line assistant coach. Two years later he was the tight end and wide receivers coach Blakeney coached at Auburn for 14 years and he won four Southeastern Conference championships and was 6-2-1 in bowl games. In 1989, Blakeney was caught on tape arranging illegal payments for Auburn player Eric Ramsey. On December 3, 1990, Blakeney became the head football coach for Troy University. Blakeney earned his first bowl win in 2006 when the Trojans beat the Rice Owls 41-17 in the New Orleans Bowl. Blakeney earned his second bowl victory in the 2010 New Orleans Bowl by defeating Ohio 48-21. Blakeney announced that he will be retiring from the Trojans at the end of the 2014 season.
