About John Riggins
John Riggins played in the NFL for 12 seasons with the New York Jets and Washington Redskins from 1971 to 1985. Riggins is the pride of Seneca, Kansas and played his prep football at Centralia High School. While at Centralia he earned AllAmerican honors on the football field as a running back, all state honors on the basketball court and won the 100-yard dash state title twice. After high school he signed on to play at the University of Kansas, where he earned All-American honors and All-Big Eight honors twice. In 1968 he led the Jayhawks to a Big Eight Conference championship, and went on to rush for 2,659 yards in his career. After earning his degree in journalism he took his talents to the NFL as a first round pick of the Jets in 1971. During his career he rushed for 11,352 yards and 104 touchdowns while earning a Pro Bowl selection in 1975, the 1983 NFL MVP Award, and leading the NFL in rushing twice in 1983 and 1984. He also helped the Redskins to a Super Bowl title in 1983 and earned a spot on the NFL 1980’s All-Decade Team. Riggins is a member of the Redskins Ring of Fame and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990.
