About Jan Stenerud
Jan Stenerud grew up as a skier in Fetsund, Norway and originally attended Montana State University on a skiing scholarship before discovering that he could kick a football a long way through the uprights. He joined the Montana State football team as a senior and would go on to impress scouts with a long range kicking ability that allowed him to hit a record 59-yard field goal during his final year in college. The kick impressed the Kansas City Chiefs so much that they selected him in the 3rd round and it was all down hill from there. For the next 13 seasons he was one of the premier kicks in the NFL for the Chiefs, and would go on to see time with the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings before leaving the game in 1985 after 19 seasons. At the time of his retirement he ranked 2nd all-time in career points and recorded an impressive 373 career field goals with 17 of those being over 50 yards. His career accomplishments include being named a six time Pro-Bowler and All-League player and being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991.
