Eric Dickerson Biography

As a member of the "Pony Express" at Southern Methodist University, Eric Dickerson amassed 4,450 rushing yards and 48 career TDs, tying Doak Walker's SMU record. After a first-team All-American season and finishing 3rd in the Heisman Trophy race behind Herschel Walker and John Elway, Dickerson was selected 2nd overall in the 1983 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. Dickerson took the League by storm as a rookie, setting rookie records for yards (1,808) and TDs (18) on his way to winning not only Rookie of the Year but also NFL's Player of the Year. In his second season, Dickerson went on to a record, rushing for a record 12 games of at least 100 yards and totaling a current NFL single season record 2,105 rushing yards. Dickerson was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in 1987 and after 3 more 1,000 yard seasons, Dickerson set an NFL record for 7 straight seasons with over 1,000 yards. After that season, Dickerson’s play began to dwindle due to injuries and off-field distractions. At the time of Dickerson’s retirement in 1993, he was the 2nd all-time rushing leader in NFL history and had set numerous NFL records including the fastest player to reach 11,000 rushing yards (103 games). Dickerson was a 6x Pro Bowler with 5 first-team All-Pro selections and in 1999 was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
