About Ed Orgeron
During his lengthy coaching career, Ed Orgeron was always one of the most beloved people in college football. Orgeron played football for Northwestern University from 1981-1984 before becoming a graduate assistant for the Wildcats football team. After an early coaching career plagued by off-field issues, Orgeron was given a second chance in 1995 as a defensive line coach for the Syracuse Orange. After a stint with Syracuse, Orgeron then moved to USC where he helped head coach Pete Carroll lead the Trojans to two AP National Championships.
In 2004, Orgeron was named as head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels and led the team for 3 seasons. Orgeron, a defensive-minded coach, was a fantastic recruiter and brought in good talent to Ole Miss. After a very short stint as an NFL assistant, Orgeron followed former colleague Lane Kiffin back to USC where he helped coach defensive line. After Kiffin was fired early in the 2013 season, Orgeron took over head coaching duties on an interim basis and led the Trojans to a 6-2 record with Orgeron at the helm.
After leaving Southern California, Orgeron went home to Louisiana as the defensive line coach of the LSU Tigers in 2016. He got another opportunity to be an interim head coach, again posting a 6-2 record. This time he kept the head coaching job and went 51-20 over six seasons. Orgeron's career reached a high point in 2019 when the Tigers won the SEC then captured the College Football Playoff National Championship. Many consider that LSU team to be one of the best in college football history.
