About Cullen Jones
Cullen Jones is not only a two-time Olympic gold medalist, but he is a world record setter and holder, as well. Jones has changed history as he became the first African-American male to win a gold medal at the World University Games and the first African-American to break a swimming World Record. As a professional swimmer, he also currently holds the American record for the 50 m freestyle. Jones was born in the Bronx of New York City but grew up in New Jersey with his family. It was only due to an incident that resulted in his almost drowning that his mother chose to enroll him in swimming lessons. Jones went on to attend and swim for North Carolina State University and he turned professional in 2006, the summer after graduating with an English degree. Specializing in freestyle events, Jones has since been a world champion in 2007, an Olympic gold medalist in 2008 and 2012, and a silver medalist at the 2012 Olympics, as well. He is an admirable example of how you can put anything you set your mind to, even if you are the first one to do it.
