Brian Burke Biography

Brian Burke is a former NHL front office executive who most recently served as President of Hockey Operations for the Calgary Flames. Burke grew up in Rhode Island, and he graduated from Providence College in 1977 with a degree in history. During his time in college, Burke played hockey, serving as the team’s captain and eventually playing in the AHL. In 1978, Burke decided to go back to school, attending Harvard Law School until graduating in 1981. Originally a player agent, Burke got his first front office role as the director of hockey operations for the Vancouver Canucks in 1987. 12 years later, Burke returned to the Canucks in a GM role, reviving the team and even winning a division title. His contract was not renewed after the 2004 season, and he went to become the GM for the Anaheim Ducks, spending two seasons with the team and winning one Stanley Cup Championship. After resigning from the team in 2008, Burke became the president and GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs failed to garner much success under Burke, and he left to become President of Hockey Operations for the Calgary Flames in 2013.
