Bob Melvin

Bob Melvin is one of the most successful managers in baseball today. He played 10 seasons in the big leagues after a stellar college career at the University of California in Berkley.Melvin got his start in pro ball after being picked as a second-round selection by the Detroit Tigers in the 1981 MLB First-Year Player Draft.Over the next five years, he proved himself in the minor leagues and earned a call-up in 1985. Over the next ten seasons, he saw time as a catcher with the Tigers, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Chicago White Sox.

Nine years after his playing career came to an end he began his big league managing career with the Seattle Mariners. After two seasons in Seattle, he signed on as the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005. In 2007 he was named the National League Manager of the Year with the Diamondbacks. Melvin had his greatest professional success after being named interim manager of the Oakland Athletics in 2011. He was named 2012 and 2018 AL Manager of the Year and led the franchise to six playoff appearances. Oakland also won the AL West Division three times under his watch. Melvin finished with the second-most wins in A's history before joining the San Diego Padres for the 2022 season. He skippered them to an 89 win season and playoff appearance the first year, as well as 82 wins during his second campaign before being hired as San Francisco Giants manager.
