Al Golden

Al Golden is the former head coach at the University of Miami and current linebackers coach for the Detroit Lions.  Golden has guided the Canes through a period of NCAA uncertainty that relates to activities occurring prior to his arrival in Coral Gables.  Golden’s best season came in 2013.  Miami was ranked as high as seventh during the season and finished with a 9-3 record.  Prior to his time with the Canes, Golden built the Temple program.  The Owls finished just 1-11 in his first season, but went 9-4 and 8-4 in his final two seasons.  In 2009, Golden was Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year and the team appeared in the MAC Championship Game.  He gained notoriety in coaching circles as the youngest defensive coordinator in the country with Virginia.  Golden had originally started his college coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Cavaliers and subsequently took positions with Boston College and Penn State.  His coaching career started at Red Bank Catholic High School in New Jersey.  Golden was a senior captain and star tight end at Penn State, learning many of the principles that would guide his future career from Joe Paterno.
