Pittsburgh Steelers Icon Rocky Bleier to Speak at Scholarship Fundraiser

Pittsburgh Steelers icon Rocky Bleier is an in-demand speaker for his great ability to tell a story. He will talk about his life and career at the 10th annual Central Blair Recreation and Park Commission Community Classic Dinner.

The Executive Director of the Commission, Mike Hofer, says Bleier is the best speaker they have ever had so he was a natural to return as the keynote. Many who attend the event are diehard Steelers fans, which helps with the impact he can make.

This dinner is the one scholarship fundraiser event that CRBC has each year to generate money that will pay program fees for low and moderate-income families. Each year, they raise between $25,000-$30,000.

Bleier played college football at University of Notre Dame and won a national championship in 1966. After his rookie year in the NFL with the Steelers, he was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in the Vietnam War.

Bleier was injured in battle and received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service. When he returned to the Steelers in 1970, he had lost a significant amount of weight and could not walk without pain.

However, Bleier persevered, eventually gaining a starting spot in Pittsburgh in 1974. He went on to be part of four Super Bowl teams and retired as the fourth leading rusher in team history.
