Retired NFL Star Rob Gronkowski Speaks at Vanderbilt IMPACT Symposium

Future Hall of Fame Tight End Shares Insights Into His Career and Personal Growth After Leaving the NFL

Vanderbilt University is known as one of America’s elite learning institutions but has, in recent years, risen to the top of the Southeastern Conference athletically, amidst juggernauts of the gridiron and hardwood. One of the main reasons for that is head football coach Clark Lea, who led the Commodores to a 10-3 record and a top-half finish in the conference in 2025. He sat down with arguably the greatest NFL tight end ever, Rob Gronkowski, at Langford Auditorium earlier this month, on March 17, for the university’s 2026 Impact Symposium. The conversation was centered around athletics, overcoming adversity, and personal growth.

A native of Amherst, New York, Gronkowski starred at the University of Arizona before being drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft. At 6'6", known for his rare blend of size, speed, power, and blocking, he reflected on his career path growing up with four competitive brothers and proving himself along the way.

The conversation began with Gronkowski discussing how he learned football as a youngster, establishing a baseline for toughness.

“I was playing against kids that were two, three, four years older than me at all times growing up. It gave me that mental edge. It gave me that toughness that I needed to get to the next level in football,” Gronkowski said.

Once he arrived in Arizona, he understood the importance and responsibility of showing that a scholarship wasn’t taken for granted and that he contributed to the team’s overall success.

“I had to prove myself. I had to get the respect [of] my teammates,” Gronkowski said.

He had a great career and became a standout, but was unfortunately sidelined with a back injury during his junior year. With NFL aspirations and Draft preparation looming, it was the first time he had to manage the game between his ears. He shared some insight into how he matched his mental grit with the physical prowess he had demonstrated throughout his career.

“This injury’s only [going to] hold me back for my junior year, and then I want to be one hundred percent after that. My confidence levels [of being] an NFL player were still up there, especially when I was getting better and healing,” Gronkowski said.

Lea then asked the star what a proud reflection of his illustrious career was. Just like he had to prove himself jumping from high school to high school, arriving in Tucson amongst D-1 talent, he knew the same would be expected of him at the sport’s highest level in Foxborough.

“I was still 20 or 21 years old. You think you know it all at that age, but you really don’t,” Gronkowski said. “I felt like it’s time for me to grow up [and] the playbook started clicking for me. When I knew the playbook, my physical level of play went up as well because I wasn’t thinking, so I could use all of my force and power.”

Gronkowski dominated as Tom Brady's favorite target. He played nine seasons with the Patriots, where he won three Super Bowls, and two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers alongside Brady, securing a fourth ring in Super Bowl LV. A five-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro, he retired in 2022 after 11 seasons with 621 receptions, 9,286 yards, and 92 touchdowns.

“The game was kind of getting too physical for me. It wasn’t fun out there. I was really beat up. I couldn’t recover,” Gronkowski said.

The fun-loving “Gronk” is now a FOX NFL studio analyst. He remains a fan favorite for his charisma and brand endorsements, and is still in the public eye, though now in a more subdued phase of life.

Gronkowski highlighted that although he liked “having a good time,” he now values his health and getting good sleep. He also discussed finding fulfillment in both being alone and with loved ones.

“If I was by myself for an hour, I’d be calling up another friend. But to find the value in being at home, with your family, friends, girlfriend, whoever it is that you love to spend time with, is a huge value in life,” Gronkowski said. “You’re always satisfied, and I’m not looking for what’s next.”
