Recently Retired Coach Steve Spurrier Speaks at Boys & Girls Club Fundraisers in Tennessee

During his legendary tenure as the head coach at his alma mater, the University of Florida, Steve Spurrier would often needle the state of Tennessee and their beloved Volunteers.  Despite the playful fun, he is an East Tennessee native who has always kept ties with where he was from.

On Tuesday, Spurrier was back home speaking at two Boys & Girls Club events.  First, he was at a steak and chicken luncheon in Shelbyville followed by a steak and burger dinner in Murfreesboro.

They raised record-breaking amounts at each event for the clubs.  It was the seventh annual event in Shelbyville for the Bedford County group and the 29th dinner put on by the Rutherford County club.

Spurrier retired from coaching this past season after a great run at South Carolina.  He went 86-49, becoming the Gamecocks all-time winningest head coach and winning the first SEC East Division title in program history.

During a 12-year run with the Gators, Spurrier won six SEC titles and the 1995 National Championship.  He is also UF's career wins leader and won five of his seven SEC Coach of the Year awards while at the school.

Spurrier was a two-time All-American and the 1966 Heisman Trophy winner while playing quarterback at UF.  Even prior to his iconic coaching career really taking off, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986.
