Paralyzed Former Hockey Player Travis Roy Speaks at Salvation Army Benefit April 8th

Motivational speaker and paralyzed former hockey player Travis Roy is taking a trip to Florida for his next speaking engagement. He is presenting at an event for The Salvation Army of Indian River County.

Roy will speak at their seventh annual benefit dinner, "Soap, Soup and Salvation." It takes place on April 8th at The Oak Harbor Club House in Vero Beach.

The event begins at 5 p.m. with appetizers followed by a silent auction and dinner. Tickets are not required, but donations are requested and will be asked for at the conclusion of the evening.

Due to an injury he experienced on the ice in his first game at Boston University, Roy is paralyzed from the neck down. Instead of fading away, he has become one of the top advocates in the country for people with spinal cord injuries.

In 1997, he launched The Travis Roy Foundation. They have since awarded over $2.5 million in grant money to help people live more independent lives.

Roy went back to BU a year after his tragic accident and graduated with a bachelor's degree in mass communications. While he is often traveling around the country, he makes his home in Boston.
