Olympic Speed Skating Champion Catriona Le May Doan Makes Appearance at Saskatchewan Summer Games

Recently, a celebrated Canadian athlete from years past keynoted a very important athletic event.  Former Olympic speed skating champion Catriona Le May Doan spoke at the opening ceremony for the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games.  

The cermony was held at Affinity Place in Estevan.  Le May Doan spoke following the opening parade of athletes and talked about the pride each of them can feel regarding their accomplishments. 

She also made several other appearances during her time in the region.  Le May Doan met with fans and had several impromptu autograph signings. 

Le May Doan took home the gold in the 500 m at the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics.  She also captured a bronze in the 1000 m in 1998. 

At one point in time, Le May Doan set 14 consecutive world records in the 500 m.  No other woman has ever accomplished that feat in one distance. 

Le May Doan won a total of 11 World Championship medals in her career, including five golds.  She is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.
