Olympic Champion Shannon Miller Advocates for Child Abuse Education

With recent scandals that have rocked the world of gymnastics, former Olympic champion Shannon Miller is making it her mission to speak out about child abuse. She recently spoke to Cheddar about the education we need to prevent any predatory behavior.

Miller wants to make sure that instead of young athletes staying away from sports, they continue to pursue their dreams, but do so with more knowledge at hand. She also stressed how important parents staying vigilant is.

"I think what parents can do now is really talk, look, listen, get to know your coaches, really communicate with your kids and make sure you know what's going on," Miller said. "As parents we can't be with them 24/7, so we have to make sure those lines of communication are open and they feel comfortable talking to us."

In addition to spreading awareness, Miller joined the board of the Monique Barr Foundation for Children and assisted them in creating a athlete-focused abuse prevention curriculum. There are five rules that are part of the MBF Athlete Safety Matters program: know what's up, spot red flags, make a move, talk it up, no blame, no shame.

Miller has remained active as a philanthropist and speaker devoted to several issues since her standout gymnastics career. She holds the record for any American gymnast with a total of seven Olympic medals.

Miller began her Olympic career in 1992, winning a total of five medals. She then captured gold medals in the team and balance beam competitions at the 1996 Games.

Miller was also a nine-time medalist at the World Championships and the 1993 and 1994 world all-around champion. She is a member of the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame, the United States Olympic Hall of Fame and the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
