New Orleans Saints Tight End Ben Watson Speaks About Racial Issues in New Book

Speaking out about social issues is not always the easiest thing to do in the professional sports world.  However, New Orleans Saints tight end Ben Watson is addressing a tough subject head on in his new book.

Watson’s first book, Under Our Skin, was released this week.  He chronicles racial conflict in the book that is part memoir, part social commentary.

During the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri last year, Watson posted some reactionary thoughts on Facebook that went viral.  As a result, he was approached to write further regarding his opinions on race.

The success of getting it published comes in concert with the best season of Watson’s career.  He has become a top target of Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees and so far has 46 catches for 551 yards and three touchdowns.

It is a remarkable time for the veteran in his 12th season to be putting up big numbers.  This is his third year in New Orleans, but the offseason departure of Jimmy Graham has opened a door for Watson.

Watson spent the first six seasons of his career with the New England Patriots, where he won a Super Bowl and was a reliable target for Tom Brady.  He also suited up for the Cleveland Browns for three years.
