Muslim-American Olympic Trailblazer Ibtihaj Muhammad Speaks at Penn State Thursday

The Student Programming Association at Penn State University has announced a list of guests for their Distinguished Speaker Series. Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad is kicking off the events tomorrow.

Muhammad's talk takes place at 8 p.m. in Heritage Hall. Tickets must be acquired in advance from the SPA, but are free to students and the public.

Actress Laverne Cox and explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau are the other two speakers that have been currently announced. There will be more revealed as the semester goes on.

This past summer, Muhammad became the first Muslim-American athlete to get on the medal podium. She won a bronze medal in team sabre competition.

Muhammad also competed in individual sabre and garnered headlines for wearing her traditional hijab. She has also won five consecutive World Championship medals with Team USA.

Muhammad was a three-time All-American at Duke University. She now serves as a sports ambassador and has been involved in the U.S. State Department's Empowering Women and Girls Through Sport Initiative.
