Minor League Home Run King Mike Hessman Retires After 20-Year Career

Mike Hessman has had one of the more unique journeys in baseball history.  On Saturday, Hessman closed the chapter on his 20-year pro baseball career.

The reason most people have never heard of him is that he spent the majority of his career in the minor leagues.  Hessman does hold the distinction of being the all-time minor league baseball home run king.

Hessman may latch on as a manager or coach in retirement.  For a baseball lifer, it could be a great fit.

Hessman finished with 433 minor league home runs.  In addition to holding the overall minor league record, he is the all-time leader for the International League and the Toledo Mud Hens.

Some career highlights for Hessman included being named International League MVP in 2007 and being selected for Team USA during the 2008 Olympics.

Hessman’s experience was not just limited to the minor leagues.  He spent parts of five seasons in the big leagues with the Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers, and the New York Mets.

Hessman also had two different tenures playing in Japan.  The Braves originally drafted him in the 15th round in 1996.
