Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith Speaks at Virginia Baseball Benefit

This weekend, Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith helped the University of Virginia baseball program raise money. He was the speaker at their 15th annual Step Up to the Plate dinner.

The event was held at 6 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena. Tickets to attend were $70 for adults, $35 for UVA baseball alumni, $30 for kids 12 and under and $20 for current students.

A key theme throughout Smith's presentation was hard work. There was also an introduction of the 2017 Cavaliers team, autograph session and live and silent auction.

Smith is regarded by many as the greatest defensive shortstop in baseball history. He won 13 Gold Gloves throughout a 19-year career with the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals.

Smith holds Major League Baseball records for assists and double plays. He was also a 15-time All-Star who accumulated nearly 2,500 hits and over 500 stolen bases.

In the 1980s, Smith helped the Cardinals reach the World Series three times and they won the title in 1982. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014.
