Former NHL Player Sheldon Kennedy Keynotes Child Abuse Conference

Former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy is one of the biggest forces from the world of sports fighting against child abuse.  Yesterday, he was the keynote speaker at the Caribou Child and Youth Centre Child Abuse Conference.

The event was held at the Stonebridge Hotel in Grande Prarie, Alberta.  There were 120 people in attendance for Kennedy's presentation.

Kennedy gave a first-hand account of how he made it through suffering abuse as a teenager.  He also discussed changes that need to be made to help victims better.

Late in Kennedy's pro career he came out publically discussing how he was abused by a coach at the youth hockey level.  In retirement, he has devoted his life to finding better ways to prevent abuse.

Kennedy co-owns Respect Group Inc., which helps people in education and youth sports prevent bullying, harrassment and abuse.  He is also Lead Director of the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre in Calgary.

In 2006, Kennedy released his autobiography, "Why I Didn't Say Anything - The Sheldon Kennedy Story."  For all his work, he was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2014.
