Former NFL Head Coach Dick Jauron Speaks at the Item All-Star Dinner

Former NFL head coach Dick Jauron was once an inspiring football player growing up on Massachusetts North Shore. On Thursday evening, he got to speak to the next generation of those athletes sitting in similar shoes.

Jauron was the speaker for the 71st annual Item All-Star Dinner at Tedesco Country Club. He was able to speak to 27 prep football stars about some of the lessons he's learned in his football career.

Key characteristics like work ethic and being a good teammate were things Jauron brought up in his presentation. He also implored people to be lifelong learners.

After being drafted in the fourth round of the 1973 NFL Draft, Jauron started out on a life in the NFL. He played in the league for eight seasons and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie with the Detroit Lions.

When his playing days were over, Jauron became defensive backs coach with the Buffalo Bills in 1985. He also filled that role for nine seasons with the Green Bay Packers before taking over as defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995.

Following the success of the expansion-Jaguars, Jauron became head coach for the first time with the Chicago Bears, where he was AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2001. He had a head coach stints with the Buffalo Bills and on an interim basis with the Detroit Lions as well.
