Former Major League Reliever Greg Swindell Speaks at Lake County Captains Hot Stove Dinner

Retired pitcher Greg Swindell was once a rising star for the Cleveland Indians. This past Thursday, he was back in the state of Ohio as a speaker at the Lake County Captains Hot Stove Dinner.

The dinner took place from 6-9 p.m. at Classic Park in the batting cage fieldhouse and clubhouse. Tickets were $30 for adults, $20 for kids from the ages of 4-12 and $60 for a VIP package.

Swindell spoke at length about the events that led to his major league debut with the Indians in 1986. It is a fascinating story about a rapid rise to the pros after being the second overall pick earlier that summer.

Swindell was a three-time All-American and finalist for the Golden Spikes Award. He had success as a starting pitcher early in his career and was named an All-Star in 1989.

Later on, Swindell transitioned to a role out of the bullpen and he went on to pitch for five other franchises in his 17-year career. In 2001, he helped the Arizona Diamondbacks win the World Series.

After his retirement in 2002, Swindell took coaching jobs at Texas State University-San Marcos and Texas. He is currently a broadcaster for the Longhorns baseball program.
