Longtime NFL Defensive Coordinator Ted Cottrell Speaks at High School Football Kickoff Event

The Knights of Columbus Council 631 held a special kickoff for the high school football season in Savannah, Georgia. They also enlisted the help of one of the most respected defensive coaches in recent football history.

Longtime NFL defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell was the guest speaker at the dinner. It was the 67th year that the Knights of Columbus chapter held their event in downtown Savannah.

Football seniors and their coaches from Savannah-Chatham County and Effingham County student-athletes were in attendance. Cottrell was able to provide wisdom from over three decades of coaching.

Cottrell began his coaching career at Rutgers University. He got his first NFL opportunity coaching linebackers with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1981 before returning to serve as defensive coordinator at Rutgers for one season in 1983.

Cottrell went on to coach the defensive line for the USFL's New Jersey Generals, the Buffalo Bills and Phoenix Cardinals. After three years, coaching linebackers in Buffalo, he was named defensive coordinator in 1998.

Under Cottrell, the Bills led the NFL in total defense in 1999. He went on to serve as a defensive coordinator for the New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings and San Diego Chargers.
