Former NBA Center John Amaechi Speaks at the Third Annual Humanist Community Day

Yesterday, Harvard University got a visit from one of the most thoughtful athletes in recent memory.  Former NBA big man John Amaechi was the keynote speaker at the third annual Humanist Community Day.

The event was held at the Humanist Hub, an initiative that assists people who seek to live an ethical life outside of a religion.  The group has origins to the 1970s when it was founded as the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard.

In addition to speaking, Amaechi was honored as the Humanist of the Year.  He spoke about the importance of realizing how one’s behaviors can affect others.

Amaechi made headlines by being the first former NBA player to come out as gay in 2007 with his memoir, “Man in the Middle”.  His public openness has given him a tremendous platform to speak out on an array of social issues.

In 2011, Amaechi was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.  He serves as a member of the American Psychological Assocation and owns a consultancy group, Amaechi Performance Systems.

Amaechi played professionally all over the world, but experienced his greatest success on the court in his final four NBA seasons.  He played a pair of seasons for the Orlando Magic and the Utah Jazz.
