Vida Blue Biography

Vida Blue was a left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball from 1969-1986. In his 17 seasons in the MLB, Blue played for three different teams: Athletics, Giants, and Royals. Blue was different from most lefties of his era because he relied on a powerful fastball rather than finesse to fool his opponents. His first big year came in 1971 where he compiled a 24-8 record with a 1.82 ERA and was awarded the AL Cy Young as well as the AL MVP. That year he also appeared in his first of six All-Star appearances and in 1978 became the first player to start in the All-Star Game for both an AL and NL team. Blue was also a key figure that helped the Athletics to win 3 straight World Series from 1972-1974. He finished his career with a combined record of 209-161 with a 3.27 ERA and 2,175 strikeouts.
