Thomas Hearns Biography

Thomas Hearns is a retired professional boxer, rising to notoriety for being the first boxer to win five world titles in five different divisions. Hearns began his amateur career in Detroit, earning the nickname “The Motor City Cobra” after a record of 155 wins to only 8 losses. Hearns entered the professional boxing realm in 1977, starting off his career with 17 straight knockout victories. In 1980, Hearns won his first World title match by defeating four year reigning champion Pipino Cuevas to advance to 29-0 to start his career. This victory and his impressive start earned Hearns the title of “Fighter of the Year” by Ring Magazine for 1980. It wasn’t until 1981 that Hearns would be defeated, losing a 14 round battle to Sugar Ray Leonard. This match was said to be one of the greatest of all time, and still holds the record for the biggest purse in sports history, earning a combined $17 million dollars. Hearns would fight his last fight in 2006, retiring after a victory by TKO, winning 61 fights while only losing 5. After retiring, Hearns lives his life in Detroit, serving as a reserve police officer.
