About Ted Cottrell
Ted Cottrell was one of the most respected football coaches on the defensive side of the ball for three decades. After a brief playing career, he got his start as the defensive line coach at Rutgers from 1973-79. He also served as defensive coordinator of the Scarlet Knights in 1980 and 1983. After three seasons on the Buffalo Bills staff, Cottrell got his first opportunity to be a defensive coordinator in the NFL with the franchise in 1998. A year later, Buffalo led the league in total defense. Cottrell went on to serve as a defensive coordinator for the New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings and San Diego Chargers. He also spent a season as a head coach in the United Football League with the New York Sentinels.
