About Pete Sampras
As one of tennis’ all-time greats, not many have matched the 14-year run of Pete Sampras. Sampras won 14 Grand Slam titles, which stood as a record upon his retirement. Half of those victories came at Wimbledon, matching the number of titles Roger Federer has. Six times he was ATP Tour Player of the Year and he also ended the year number one a record six times. Over his career, he had over $42 million in tournament earnings. In 1990, Sampras became the youngest Grand Slam winner ever with his triumph at the U.S. Open at 19 years old. He would dominate the decade of tennis alongside the man he beat that year in New York City, his rival Andre Agassi. Sampras holds a 20-14 edge all-time against Agassi. Overall, he was 762-222 and held the top spot in the world rankings for 286. When the Sampras family moved to Palos Verdes, California in 1978, the seven year old started seriously pursuing tennis. He still occasionally plays in exhibition events.
