About Owen Hanson
Owen Hanson is a former University of Southern California (USC) athlete who became an international drug trafficker and illegal sports bookmaker before his conviction and later pivot to legitimate business. A Redondo Beach, California native, he played volleyball at USC. He later walked on as a tight end during the Pete Carroll era, contributing to the 2004 national championship squad. He later ran a large-scale enterprise trafficking drugs linked to a Mexican cartel, alongside high-stakes illegal gambling and money laundering across the U.S., Central/South America, and Australia. Arrested in 2015, he pleaded guilty to racketeering and drug conspiracy charges and received a roughly 21-year sentence in 2017. Released early around 2024 after cooperating with authorities, he has focused on redemption: co-authoring the memoir “The California Kid” (2024), starring in the Mark Wahlberg-produced Amazon Prime docuseries “Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel”, winner of the 2026 Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Documentary Series, and launching California Ice Protein, a protein ice cream/bar brand he developed ideas for while incarcerated earning his MBA.
