Nomar Garciaparra Biography

Nomar Garciaparra is a former Major League Baseball shortstop and current ESPN analyst. The Milwaukee Brewers originally selected Garciaparra in the 5th round of the 1991 draft, but he did not sign. Garciaparra attended Georgia Tech University where he helped the Yellow Jackets reach the College World Series title game in 1994, but they lost to Oklahoma. Garciaparra was an Atlantic Coast Conference AllStar and a first-team All-American twice in 1993-94. The Boston Red Sox selected Garciaparra in the first round of the 1994 MLB Draft. He played his first three seasons in the Red Sox minor league system. Garciaparra made his Major league debut on August 31, 1996 and his first Major league hit was a homerun. During his rookie year, Garciaparra was named Rookie of the Year, competed in the Home Run Derby and he finished eighth in the MVP voting. The Red Sox traded Garciaparra to the Chicago Cubs after the 2003 season. He also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics before he announced his retirement in 2011. He signed a oneday deal with the Rex Soxs, so he was able to retire as a Red Sox.
