One of the most intimidating and polarizing boxers to ever step into a ring, Mike Tyson, was a freak of nature during his professional boxing career. He attracted the masses and noise from all directions whenever he fought, and in his rise to stardom, Tyson earned the title of becoming the undisputed world heavyweight champion from 1987-1990.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Tyson won the WBC title in 1986 at the age of 20, becoming the youngest heavyweight champion ever. And till this day, Mike still holds the record as the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA, and IBF heavyweight titles at 20 years, 4 months, and 22 days old. He was unbeatable in his prime. During his first 19 professional fights, all of them were won by knockout and 12 of them were over by the first round.
But just as fast as his rise to fame emerged, so was his own down-spiral after a short-lived marriage to actress Robin Givens was followed by a series of personal misfortunes. In 1992, Tyson was jailed for rape and later released in 1995. He attempted a comeback later that year and regained the WBC heavyweight crown in March of 1996. But not before Evander Holyfield in November 1996 took the crown back and a rematch in June of 1997 saw Mike bite a chunk of Holyfield's ear off — in one of most controversial sporting event moments of all-time.
Today, Mike has gone through filling for bankruptcy and three years of probation for a drug charge during the past decade. Although his status as a celebrity still stays strong, featured in movies such as ‘The Hangover’, so too does his boxing legacy.
