Matt Wells

Matt Wells was born on August 10, 1973 in Columbia, South Carolina. While Wells was born in South Carolina, he spent much of his life growing up in Oklahoma. Wells attended Utah State University where he was redshirted as a freshman. In his sophomore and junior seasons, Wells played in a total of 16 games and as a senior, he was named to the 1996 Big West Conference co-championship team, but he did not play a game. After his time at Utah State, Wells’ coaching career began at the U.S. Naval Academy where he spent five years as a quarterbacks’ coach, fullbacks’ coach and wide receivers coach. He also coached at Tulsa, New Mexico and Louisville before returning to his alma mater as a coach. Wells was named the quarterbacks’ coach of Utah State in December 2010. He also served as the offensive coordinator and in 2013, he was named the head coach. In six seasons with the Aggies, he won nine or more games three times. That got the attention of Texas Tech University. who hired him as their new head coach in 2019.
