About Lenny Wilkens
Lenny Wilkins played point guard at Providence College from 1957 to 1960 and led his team to two NIT appearances while scoring 1,193 points, which ranks him second all-time in program history. In honor of his performance Providence College retired his No. 14 jersey and he was later inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. In 1960 he was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft with the sixth overall pick by the St. Louis Hawks, and wen ton to enjoy a successful 15-year professional career. From 1960 to 1975 he played with the Hawks, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Portland Trailblazers. During that span he earned nine All-Star appearances, was named the 1971 NBA All-Star Game MVP and scored 17,772 career points. For his performance the Seattle SuperSonics retired his legendary No. 19 jersey and he was named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary AllTime Team. After his retirement as a player he turned his focus to coaching and went on to serve as the head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics, Portland Trail Blazers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks from 1969 to 2005. During that time he led his teams to 1332 victories and 20 playoff appearances in route to earning NBA Coach of the Year honors in 1994 with the Hawks. In 1978 he led the SuperSonics to the NBA Finals, and captured an NBA title the following year with a 52-win season. Wilkens has been named one of the top-ten NBA coaches of all-time and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach, a player, and as an assistant coach of the 1992 Dream Team.
