Lennox Lewis Biography

Lennox Lewis, known as “The Lion”, compiled an astonishing career boxing record of 44-2 from 1989 to 2003. Lewis grew up in Stratford, England and moved to Canada at the age of twelve. During his high school days he was a three sports letter winner in football, soccer and basketball. However, he ultimately decided to pursue a career in boxing, which turned out to be a wise choice. In 1983 he won the World Amateur Junior title and went on to compete in the super heavyweight division at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic games. Over the next five years he compiled an amateur record of 75-7 with an impressive 58 knockouts and won gold in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games in the Super Heavyweight division. After turning pro in 1989 he won his first 25 fights and captured the European heavyweight title, British Heavyweight Title, Commonwealth Heavyweight title, and WBC Heavyweight Title. He lost his first fight in 1994, but returned with a vengeance, winning his next 13 consecutive fights and winning back the WBC Heavyweight title in 1997. Lewis retired in 2003 as one of the greatest Heavyweight champions in history. In 2008 he was inducted into the Canada Sports Hall of Fame, and was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2009 and Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
