About Greg McMackin
Greg McMackin’s coaching career spans nearly five decades in college football, the USFL and NFL. His coaching career began as a graduate assistant at the University of Arizona in 1968 and high school assistant at Aloha High School in Oregon from 1969. Eventually he landed the head-coaching job at Aloha and proved himself to be a true pro. In 1973 Western Oregon State tapped him as their defensive coordinator and from that point on he became a journeyman at the college level. From 1976 to 1984 he served as an assistant at three different colleges before heading to the United States Football League in 1985 to coach defensive backs for the Denver Gold. In 1986 Oregon Tech hired him as their new head coach. From 1986 to 1989 he led Oregon Tech to a #3 national ranking and 4 winning seasons in route to winning two NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Awards. Eventually, he’d head to the NFL to serve as the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks from 1995 to 1998, but not before serving as the defensive coordinator for Utah, Navy, and Miami. After his stint with the Seahawks ended in 1998 he briefly coached at Hawaii and Texas Tech before heading back to the NFL to coach linebackers for the 49ers from 2003 to 2005. Coach McMackin finished his career as the head coach at the University of Hawaii from 2008 to 2011 and led the Warriors to a WAC Championship in 2010.
