About Don Newcombe
Don Newcombe was a trailblazing African-American pitcher. The four-time All-Star won a World Series with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1955. In his rookie 1949 season, Newcombe was the first African-American pitcher to start a World Series game. That year, he won 17 games and led the league in shutouts on the way to National League Rookie of the Year honors. Newcombe would have his greatest season in 1956. He won the inaugural Cy Young Award and was also the NL MVP by going 27-7 with a 3.06 ERA. Newcombe finished his career with the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians. The Dodgers brought him back upon retirement to serve in a variety of roles and he is a special advisor to the chairman of the team. Newcombe has also served as an inspiration over the years to many suffering from alcoholism. He kicked his own early troubles with substance abuse to produce a productive post-baseball life.
