About Don Cherry
He’s the man with the voice, the man with the threads, and the man with that brings the action on the ice to life. His name is Don Cherry, and he is Canadian hockey.
Cherry’s obsession with the sport began as a child and bloomed into a successful professional playing career that spanned 23 years from 1950 to 1972. Immediately after retiring as a player he entered the realm of coaching, becoming the AHL Coach of the Year in 1972 before taking his talents to the NHL and earning NHL Coach of the Year honors in 1976. As a coach he was highly successful, leading to Boston Bruins teams to the Stanley Cup Finals.
When his career as a player and coach finally came to an end Cherry decided to talk about the game, and that’s what he’s done ever sense. Known for his outlandish personality and flamboyant dress, Cherry has a Canadian patriotism that is tough to rival, and it comes to the surface every time he covers a game as a commentator or analyst.
Currently Cherry serves as a co-host for “Coach’s Corner”, a segment on Canada’s popular sports program Hockey Night in Canada, and also makes appearances on ESPN during the Stanley Cup. Cherry is one of a kind, a true professional in every sense of the word.
