About Carmelita Jeter
At her peak, Carmelita Jeter was one of the fastest women in the world. Before her sprinting career, Jeter focused on basketball, as it was the preferred sport in her family. It was not until her basketball coach suggested that she try out for track that her natural sprinting talent was unveiled.
Jeter attended California State University where she set the record for most NCAA medals by a California State University track athlete. She also became the University’s first U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier. In 2009, Jeter participated in the 2009 World Athletics Championships where she was a favorite for the gold medal, but she finished with the bronze medal. Jeter was the 2011 IAAF World Champion in the 100 meters.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Jeter won the gold medal in the 4x100 m relay, the silver medal in the 100 m, and the bronze medal in the 200 m. Jeter is currently the head track and field coach at UNLV.
