Brett Butler Biography

Brett Butler is a former MLB center fielder and current coach with the Miami Marlins. Prior to his time in the MLB, Butler was an outfielder at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. In his three seasons at the school, Butler would help the team win three straight championships, and he practically rewrote the schools record books. In search of a speedy leadoff hitter, the Atlanta Braves selected Butler in the 23rd round of the 1979 MLB Draft. Butler made his MLB debut in 1981 after two seasons in the minor leagues, and he helped the Braves win a division title that same year. In 1983, Butler was traded to the Cleveland Indians, playing there for four seasons before signing with the San Francisco Giants. During his time in San Francisco, Butler established himself as one of the league’s best leadoff hitters, and helped the Giants win the1989 NL Pennant. In 1990, Butler signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, reaching the prime of his career in 1991 as he earned his first and only All-Star appearance. After a stop with the New York Mets, Butler retired as a Dodger in 1997, ending his career with a .290 batting average. He now serves as the third base/outfield coach for the Miami Marlins
