About Bob Schul
Bob Schul is the only American to win a gold medal in the 5000 meters at the Olympics. Shul accomplished the feat at the 1964 Games in Tokyo. Leading up to his Olympic triumph, he set an American record for the 5000m and three-mile. Schul was also the world record holder in the two-mile. He won the 1964 U.S. Championships. Schul competed collegiately at Miami University in between stints with the Air Force. In 1965, Schul was able to capture the U.S. Championship again and set a new American record. Shortly after that victory, he retired from competition. In retirement, Schul has held various coaching positions in track and field. He was the head coach over the men's and women's cross country teams and the track programs from 1996-2007.
